Women Rule Conference
It was great to serve as an "Ambassador" at theWomen Rule: Driving The Conversation program on human trafficking on Wednesday, November 20th. Thanks to POLITICO, Google and Tory Burch for making this event possible and to Greta Van Sustern, Cindy McCain, Meryl Chertoff and all the women who joined us. I look forward to participating in the next Women Rule program on December 4th.
Over the summer, POLITICO, Google and the Tory Burch Foundation announced a joint partnership to produce extended programming dedicated to exploring how women are leading change in politics, policy and their communities. The program, Women Rule, features prominent women in power and brought to life through events, video, print and digital media, polling, social media and products.
The cornerstone of Women Rule is a four-part, high-profile event series in Washington, D.C. featuring members of Congress, administration officials, leaders in business and entrepreneurs. The discussions, which are also livestreamed on POLITICO, examines the steps women leaders are taking to effect change - everything from spurring a movement to passing legislation. In addition, a roundtable conversation takes place at each event modeled on the Tory Burch Foundation's mentoring events for women entrepreneurs; these discussions provide an opportunity for influential women to offer advice and guidance to the next generation of leaders.
Check out coverage from this event at www.POLITICO.com/womenrule and here to learn more about the Women Rule Program: http://www.politico.com/about/press/press-release/dozens-of-notable-female-leaders-to-participate-in-women-rule. |

Veterans Day Ceremonies
American Post Legion 270 hosted their annual Veterans Day Ceremony at McLean High School on Monday, November 11th. My father, John Burns, also attended the Great Falls Freedom Memorial's annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Great Falls on November 11th. Their speaker and special guest was Mr. Sandy Pidgeon, a retired Navy SEAL Officer.
On Veterans Day, we remember particularly how blesses we are to live in a country that celebrates liberty and promotes and protects freedom. Our freedoms are protected around the clock by the greatest fighting force the world has ever known. Our way of life would not be possible without their work and sacrifice and dedicated service to our country. Thank you for everything that you do to defend our nation.
My colleagues and I at the General Assembly have made veterans initiatives a top priority. In the past three years, the General Assembly has passed 117 bills and 28 budget amendments directly benefitting our military and veteran communities to include their families. These initiatives included, but are not limited to, a real estate tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans, Veteran ID Cards, fees reduction for disabled veterans on hunting and fishing licenses, an increase in the number of claims agents (twice), additional funding for more training for the claims agents, an automated veteran claims processing system, specialized license plates, and many others too numerous to mention.

Virginia Wounded Warrior Program Celebrates 5th Birthday
Our Virginia Wounded Warrior Program (VWWP) celebrated its 5th birthday on October 18, 2013. In just 5 short years the VWWP has grown from a concept to serving over 17,000 veterans and their families. The VWWP provides:
- Individual assessment of individual and family needs
- Direct linking to needed services including behavioral healthcare, veterans' benefits, housing, and employment assistance programs
- Direct support provided by veteran peer specialists and resource specialists
- Peer and family support groups
- Assistance for incarcerated veterans preparing for reentry
The VWWP is a conduit connecting veterans and their families with multiple state and federal agencies who provide services from mental health to housing for the veterans and their families and guides them through the process. For example, the dedicated personnel in DVS coordinate with 14 different housing agencies to identify and provide housing for our Homeless Veterans. Click here to watch a short video of some major success stories.

NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative and Virginia Values Veterans (V3)
Through NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative, NVTC is assisting veterans' transition to a civilian career that utilizes their skills and experience. The Initiative works to watch veterans with jobs, internships, mentorships and certifications, while also providing support to member companies in their efforts to hire, train and retain qualified veteran employees.
A main component of the Initiative is the online veterans community and job board, created by NVTC and Monster.com, which provides tools for veteran job seekers, such as a military skills translator, access to a serachable database of jobs at NVTC member companies and links to educational resources. More than 130 NVTC member companies have jobs posted on the website for a total of more than 5,000 jobs since the site's launch. For more information about the Initiative please visit www.nvtc.org/veterans.
Our Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Initiative also provides a new approach to hiring veterans here in the Commonwealth. This program trains employers how to adapt their entire operation to recognize the special skills and qualifications of our veterans. Currently, 125 certified employers have pledged to hire 4,346 veterans with 2,966 already hired. The V3 Program is recognized nationally as the model for other states.

Consider Donating to Philippines Recovery Effort
Governor Bob McDonnell recently urged Virginians to join in the effort to help the people of the Philippines as they recover from devastating Typhoon Haiyan. The storm has left thousands dead, and the Philippine government has reported that some 2 million residents are now in need of aid.
There are many aid organizations working in storm-recovery efforts. Three of the biggest are the Philippine Red Cross, the American Red Cross, and UNICEF. We can donate to the organizations by visiting their web sites, which are listed below.
