VDOT URGES MOTORISTS TO DELAY TRAVEL

Morning commute will be extremely difficult

FAIRFAX ? The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) urges motorists to avoid all travel this morning until road conditions improve.  Snow totals range from five inches in PrinceWilliam County to 12 inches in Loudoun County. 

Road crews continue to clear interstates and major roads where heavy snow, abandoned vehicles, downed power lines and trees created gridlock on many roads.  

While commuter routes are being plowed continuously, many remain snow-packed and slippery.  VDOT stresses that these roads are barely passable and drivers cannot safely navigate them at this time.

Today crews will concentrate on interstates, primary roads and subdivisions. VDOT asks that if residents are planning to shovel their driveways, to shovel to the right and refrain from clearing the last few feet at the street as plows may push snow into back into the driveways.

More than 2,200 trucks are treating and plowing major roads and subdivisions in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties.
