Update from Delegate Comstock
Reconvene Session:
Last month my colleagues and I gathered in Richmond for the Reconvene Session to vote on Governor McDonnell's 213 amendments. With the main focus this year being on job creation, we restored funding for the Governor's Opportunity Fund to help create more jobs and reinstated a $10 million tax deduction for Virginia employers. Approximately 70% of the budget amendments focused on Economic Development Initiatives, as we continue to create jobs for the Commonwealth.
First Meeting of Governor's Economic Development and Job Creation Commission in Richmond:
Last Wednesday I joined over 60 business leaders and entrepreneurs from around the Commonwealth to begin work on the Governor's Commission. The primary goal of the Commission is to make recommendations on how Virginia's economic development and job creation efforts can be improved. I will serve on the Business Recruitment subcommittee, which is tasked with developing policies and recommendations to help bring new jobs and opportunities to the citizens of the Commonwealth. I invite you to share with us any ideas you might have on job creation for the Commonwealth. To read more about the first meeting, read the Governor's press release here.
McLean Project for the Arts
The McLean Project for the Arts is hosting their annual Spring Benefit on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 7p.m. This annual fundraiser helps the organization raise money to support its exhibitions and educational programs. This year, Governor McDonnell is the special guest. Ticket prices start at $225. If you have not received an invitation and would like to attend, please contact Sandy Treanor at 703-709-1953 or [email protected]. For more information, visit the MPA website.
Lyme Disease Awareness Month
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month in the Commonwealth. Last Monday I joined Congressman Frank Wolf, Delegate Tom Rust, and Delegate Tag Greason for an informative Forum on Lyme disease in Loudoun County. Speakers at the forum included Dr. David Goodfriend, director of Loudoun County Health Department, and Dr. Christine Coussens, with the Institute of Medicine. Dr. David Gaines, from the Virginia Department of Health, also traveled from Richmond to attend the forum and to demonstrate the Department's commitment to focus on this growing problem. Over 100 people from Loudoun County and Fairfax County came to the forum to address continued challenges to hundreds of sufferers of Lyme disease in our communities. We are all committed to making sure that chronic Lyme disease and the growing and insidious threat of this disease is given continued attention from our state and national public health officials.
